Book Beginnings / Friday 56 #5

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City ReaderShe invites you to share the first sentence or so of your current read and share your thoughts about the sentence, initial impressions of the book and anything else it inspires.

Friday 56 is hosted by Fredas VoiceThis is where you grab the book you are reading, turn to page 56 (or 56% on your ereader) and post a few sentences.

I'm currently reading The Astonishing Colour of After by Emily X.R. Pan.

My mother is a bird. This isn't like some William Faulkner stream-of-consciousness crap. My mother. Is literally. A bird.

This is pretty intriguing and quite powerful for an opening line. It makes you wonder how the narrators mother is a bird and you instantly want to know more and read on. Well that's what happened to me.

For a moment there is only the tick of the tiny alarm clock on the shelf. And then Waipo gasps with understanding. She pats Waigong's arm, and he opens his eyes, gazes down at the pages. "My mother has turned into a bird" I say in English . Waipo nods.

The Astonishing Colour of After is certainly taking me on one hell of an emotional journey. It's one of those books that you just can't stop reading because you want to know more and more. I am excited to finish it.
