The Hustle by Elizabeth Roderick Excerpt (The Hustle Blog Tour)

It's my stop on The Hustle blog tour and I have an exclusive excerpt from the book to share with you! Thank you to Giselle at Xpresso Book Tours for giving me the opportunity to take part in this blog tour. Hope you enjoy!

“You’re too beautiful to be working in a place like this,” Liria said, and Nadine laughed.

“The money’s good, better than I’d get anywhere else, and there are fringe benefits.” She straightened up, and reached into the pockets of her miniscule shorts, bringing out a tiny baggie of white powder. Liria’s heart sank and her stomach writhed.

Nadine tapped some of the coke out onto a little mirror on the counter and chopped it into four lines with a supermarket club card. Liria watched mutely. Nadine rolled up a dollar bill and held it out to her. When Liria made no move to take it, Nadine smiled. “It makes it easier. It makes it feel better.”

Liria stared at the coke, feeling slightly ill.

“It doesn’t get you hooked like the other stuff. It’s just like strong coffee,” Nadine insisted.

Liria wasn’t sure why she took the dollar bill from her hand. It makes it feel better, the voice in her head repeated. It makes it easier. She leaned over the mirror, plugging one nostril with her finger and snorting a line with the other. She tilted her head back and closed her eyes, sniffing as the coke dripped bitter down the back of her throat. A few seconds later, her ears rang, and a rush of adrenaline tore through her, her heart thundering. She opened her eyes again and smiled, and Nadine smiled back. Nadine jerked her chin toward the mirror. “There’s another one for you,” she said.

Liria shook her head and handed the dollar bill to her. “No. One’s enough.”

Nadine shrugged and bent over the mirror, and Liria stood up to give her room. When Nadine straightened, all three lines were gone.

“Feels good, right?” she said, and Liria nodded, a feeling of exhilaration crawling up from her feet to her scalp. Nadine’s pupils were dilated, her lips curled into a beguiling smile. She was breathing fast, her breasts rising and falling under her scanty top, and Liria couldn’t take her eyes off of them. Liria tugged her closer by one of her belt loops and kissed her, running her fingers down Nadine’s bare waist and along those perfectly round hips, her skin smooth and brown and perfect. Nadine pressed those hips against her, making Liria ache, then pried herself away, grinning. “Save it for the show,” she said. She took her by the hand and pulled her back down the hallway.

The music got louder, and Liria’s senses pulsed along with the beat. Everything looked bright and beautiful, even the dirty concrete floor and smudged walls. She smiled to herself as she watched Nadine’s round ass wiggle ahead of her. She was about to get paid to fuck a hot girl. Her life had never been better.

Liria is nineteen, homeless, and addicted to heroin…

She’s also determined to not end up dead—like her mother. But every time she tries to get clean, on her feet, and back on the employment train, everything falls apart. This time is different. This time, she knows there are only two choices—recovery or death. Once she gets clean, though, her life ends up even rockier than before.

Desperate for help, Liria goes to the one person she can count on for a safe place to stay and regular meals—her father, Cyryl Czetski. However, she soon learns Cyryl isn’t her real father, and he wants a very different kind of relationship. Liria ultimately rejects his advances and ends up on the streets yet again, this time working in an illegal strip club.

Finally taking control of her life, Liria lands a job in a Vegas nightclub, where she meets Arty—the woman of her dreams.

Arty is beautiful, funny, and rich. But when other nightclub employees turn up dead—including Liria’s best friend, Lee—Liria suspects the business might be a front for something far more sinister.

When Arty reveals Liria’s life is also in danger, she promises to keep her safe. But Arty’s acting strangely, and seems to know too much about the mysterious deaths. Is she really trying to save her, or is she holding her hostage, using her as a pawn in a game Liria doesn’t understand?

Liria thought she was used to always second guessing everyone’s intentions. That’s how life is. But if the drugs don’t ruin her, The Hustle will…
